Car Fire Safety: What to Do If a Car Catches Fire?

  • Stop the car and turn off the ignition.

  • Get every person out of the car, and don’t allow anyone to go back to retrieve personal items.

  • Call 911.
  • Alert oncoming traffic if possible.

  • Nonperishable, high-energy foods, such as unsalted nuts, dried fruits, and hard candy

  • Drinking water
  • Reflective vest in case you need to walk to get help
  • Car charger for your cell phone
  • Fire extinguisher

  • Duct tape
  • Rain poncho
  • Additional items for cold weather include a snow brush, shovel, windshield washer fluid, warm clothing, cat litter for traction and blankets

It is important that you carry the best car fire extinguisher in your car at all times, as you never know when you might need it. Car fire extinguishers have the same capacity as normal fire extinguishers, with the only difference being that they are more compact so they don’t take up vital space.
