Fire Protection For Industrial Kitchens

Industrial kitchens in restaurants, hotels, college or hospital cafeterias are prone to sudden fire accidents. Grease & high heat put people & property at a big risk. These fires have reported a majority of percentage (over 40%) of injuries, deaths & millions of rupees in property damage every year. Ex-Buzz enables businesses with efficient & effective kitchen fire protection systems to minimize risk, damages & loss of property in addition to establishing your business’ value in the eyes of the patrons, subscribers & customers.

Typical Functioning of A Kitchen Fire Protection System

Designed to protect a wide variety of kitchen appliances such as stove tops or deep fryers, the nozzles for fire suppression systems are installed in the kitchen hood exhaust, so that the wet chemicals can be discharged directly over the source of the fire. The system uses a liquid fire extinguishing agent based on salt that specializes in fighting fires involving cooking oil & fat. (Class F)

When there is a fire outbreak, either a thermal detector or polymeric detection tube detects this incident. The cylinder valve of the system is then opened by the detection system & the suppression agent is discharged through the piping network to control/douse fire quickly.

Two types of fire detection systems available
– Electric
– Pneumatic

Benefits of Fire Protection For Industrial Kitchens

  • Cools grease and surrounding cooking surfaces
  • Rapid flame knockdown
  • Extinguishing agent is stable, therefore it will not deteriorate over time
  • Efficient extinguishing agent for class F or K fires
  • Agent reacts with grease to form foam-like layer, which starves fire from oxygen halting combustion & re-ignition
  • Discharge through all the nozzles at the same time with appropriate agent quantity
  • Non-corrosive agent

Areas Where Kitchen Fire Protection Systems Are Installed

Fire Doors

Fire hazards are unanticipated but they can be prevented only if appropriate fire safety measures are put in place. Fire doors can help slow or prevent the spread of fire and smoke. They resist the penetration of heat and flames to slow the fire for a specified time period and provide “safe” additional time for people to exit the building.

Fire doors are made of a combination of materials such as glass, steel, timber, aluminium or galvanized iron.

Benefits of Fire Doors

  • Protect occupants from the risk of fire
  • Means of safe egress to an open space & allow building occupants to evacuate safely
  • Resist fire, smoke & fumes for longer period of time & protect occupants from injuries
  • Minimise property damage due to fire accidents

Applications of Fire Doors

  • Hospitals and Medical centres
  • Schools and Colleges
  • Office & Commercial buildings
  • Residential Towers

Fire Curtains

In large commercial premises, there are multiple challenges when it comes to building compartments and passive fire protection. Where fire doors cannot be implemented, fire curtains can be installed. Fire curtains are made of high quality fire resistant fabric. It minimizes heat transfer from one fire compartment to the next. Fire curtains are very compact and installation space needed is very small.

Benefits of Fire Curtains

  • Compartmentation – Fire curtains provide compartmentation, so that fire spread is impeded.
  • Protecting lives – They create evacuation routes for the people so they can safely leave building
  • Limit damage to building & property – Fire is isolated in one place/compartment in building, so it can be extinguished quickly
  • Preventing interruption of business activities – Due to compartmentation, all the business activities do not get interrupted after the event
  • Affordable alternative – Relatively cheaper than fire-resistant walls or fire doors
  • Aesthetic solution – Lightweight & compact design make fire curtains an aesthetically pleasing alternative

Applications of Fire Curtains

  • Atrium, Lobbies and Reception areas
  • Escape routes containing doorways and corridors
  • Lobbies and Lift/Elevator openings
  • Stairs and Escalators
  • Wall Openings
